The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Rock Fans

Marking two decades since the legendary game hit the market in North America, offering players everywhere the opportunity to feel like rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before a packed crowd of friends.

Developed by Harmonix, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for a surprising billion-dollar franchise that had a significant impact on numerous musicians included, introducing classic groups to millions of younger players.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges in securing the songs – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We rerecorded every song because the dollar figure prohibitive,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane was operating on a shoestring budget, and we were pretty convinced it would fail. But once Guitar Hero took off, and record sales and radio play increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish group one featured act included their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game brought older hits to the forefront: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered music that was past it, however once it got featured on the title young people were finding it, suddenly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s debut album remained not available in the US, meaning Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the group during their a North American tour supporting the rock giants. “Their crew had on the song on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Music's heavyweight names soon took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the band greater revenue compared to their records. It sold more than half a million units in its first week, and sales of their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

The series still motivates nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality completed a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is difficult enough on the hardest setting, not to mention performed at double speed and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. The streamer stated requiring nine months to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you should use actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist the artist.

The band previously completed a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, but Li says it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it threatened to eclipsing all other accomplishments. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact of a Plastic Guitar

Top-tier marketing, whether it’s for cars, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Was the game able to tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of being a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to do it”.

The majority installments came out in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games such as Clone Hero and newer releases have maintained the scene alive, and there’s set to be a new product from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered work on its debut music game. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks it could remain evergreen, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
